Palestinian Obstacles to a Just Peace

Peace negotiations, and any Quaker proposals, will need to take any Palestinian concerns into account. These include -

  • So long as the Hamas and Fatah movements remain in conflict Hamas will attack any agreement reached by Fatah as a betrayal of Palestine.
  • For Islam all of Palestine, including the State of Israel, is inalienably Muslim. Any Jewish (i.e. non-Muslim) State would be unacceptable.
  • Muslims believe that the Prophet ascended to heaven from Jerusalem. Accordingly, Jerusalem is one of the three holy cities of Islam, besides Mecca and Medina. They cannot permit Jerusalem to fall into Jewish hands.
  • Many Palestinian refugees still long to return to their former homes in Israel, now destroyed or occupied by Israeli intruders.
  • The Separation Wall, the expanding settlements and the military occupation have led many Palestinians to lose hope for a negotiated peace.

Also note Israeli anxieties and aspirations.
